The vast, magnificent garden at Belsay Hall, listed Grade I in the Register of Parks and Gardens, is largely the work of two related men. Sir Charles Monck designed the dramatic Quarry Garden – a series of ravines, corridors and pinnacles, and his grandson, Sir Arthur Middleton, enriched it with all manner of rare and exotic plants. Species of rhododendrons flower for most of the year here and there is also a large Hybrid Rhododendron Garden, in full bloom from late May/June. Then there are the formal terraces and winte r garden. Belsay is definitely a plantsman’s garden and much of the original planting survives, including magnificent magnolias, Pieris floribunda and Exochorda giraldii.
