Birmingham City Football Club

It is only in the last few seasons that the Blues have began to rid themselves of the tag of 'perennial under-achievers'. Birmingham's history is littered with disappointments and near-misses, and 1963's League Cup success stands out not because they defeated arch-rivals Aston Villa in the final but because it remains the only time they have won a major trophy. Promoted to the Premiership via a penalty shoot-out in 2002's Division One Play-Off Final after a 16-year absence from the top-flight, the Blues performed creditably last season and avoided the drop comfortably. Backed by David Gold's millions, it remains to be seen whether they can match or beat their highest top-flight position (sixth in 1956), but at least they're finally getting closer...

Not that promotion to the Premiership, via the play-offs, would herald an end to the club's topsy-turvy nature, though. Burnley Football Club

Half the ground was rebuilt in the mid 1990's, much improving the overall look of Turf Moor. The two new stands, The Jimmy McIlroy & James Hargreaves stands are particularly impressive, at one end and one side of the ground. Both are large two tiered stands, complete with a row of executive boxes. Both were built on two large former terraces, one of which was uncovered. The other two older stands are smaller, single tiered, and as usual when surrounded with new stands, look worse than they actually are.

The ground was completely re-built in the 1990's with the last 'new' stand, the Cemetery End, completed in 1999. The Manchester Road End is a fair sized stand that is covered and has an electric scoreboard; however it does not run the full width of the pitch, one side ending with the edge of the penalty box. The other end, the Cemetery End, is a former terrace that has been demolished and replaced with a relatively new all seater stand.

The Carnarvon Athletic Club, as it was known, played the first match on 18th November 1876 against the North Wales Training College – the formation was an adventurous 1-2-8 and surprisingly finished a draw. Carnarvon Athletic’s second match was against Bangor, Athletic lost 1-0 and buoyed by this success the Bangor club were officially formed two days later.

Chelsea Football Club

Chelsea have always done things differently. Their beginnings were certainly unusual; the club had a ground before they were formed, and were elected to the Football League without even playing a match. Success, though, wasn't so easy to obtain and 1955's league title was the club's first major honour. 1970 witnessed more silverware in the form of the FA Cup and the European Cup-Winners Cup followed a year later. But the 'golden era' was short-lived and by 1975 the 'twilight years' had begun with the club struggling both on and off the pitch. Fact: Stamford Bridge was originally offered to Fulham to play there but they declined the chance and so Chelsea took the chance instead.

The East Stand is slightly taller than the facing West Stand, having a few more rows of seating and some enclosed glassed viewing areas at the back of it. Grimsby Town Football Club

The most impressive stand is the John Smiths Stand, which was only built in the mid 80's. This stand is much higher that the remaining three stands, offering excellent views of the North Sea. This does impact on the atmosphere though, as most songs pass straight over the remaining three stands! The rest of the ground is rather dated, and the club is well aware of the need to re-develop. They have recently applied for planning permission to built a new 15,000 all seater stadium on the edge of town, on the M180, and are obviously reluctant to spend vast amounts of money upgrading Blundell Park.

Hartlepool United Football Club

Hartlepool United Football Club Formed in 1908. The ground was greatly improved in the mid 1990's, with the construction of two new stands. The Cyril Knowles Stand is the newer of the two side stands. It is a small single tier covered, seated stand which is raised above ground level. At the other side is the Camerons Brewery Stand which has covered seating to the rear and open terrace to the front. The newer end is the small Expamet Town End, a covered terrace, for home fans. The other end, the Rink End stand, is a small covered all seated stand which houses away supporters.
