Ascot Racecourse - Berkshire

Ascot, founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, is one of the world's greatest racecourses. It was while Queen Anne was out riding on the edge of Windsor Great Park that she noticed a natural clearing near the villge of East Cote, now called Ascot. Queen Anne ordered a course to be laid out 'for horses to gallop at full stretch' and so the Royal Racecourse was born. The first four-day Royal Meeting was held in June 1768 and it has continued to the present day. Today Ascot Racecourse stages 27 days of the highest quality flat and National Hunt racing throughout the year. Royal Ascot is internationally renowned as a sporting and social occasion, where tradition, pageantry, fashion and style all meet in a glorious setting.

Normally holding at least 25 days racing every year Ayr is host to the Scottish Grand National, the Ayr Gold Cup and a host of other valuable races during it's 12 month racing programme. The highlight of the jumping season is undoubtedly the Scottish Grand National, held in April, just a couple of weeks or so after the Aintree equivalent with many top performers taking in both races. None have so far emulated the great Red Rum who won both races in 1974. OUR first full year as owners at Ayr Racecourse has been a rewarding one, with great races, good meetings and increased attendances. It's always pleasing to see bigger crowds coming back to Ayr.

There has been racing at Standlake since 1972 and it originally started off as a dirt track. In April 1983 the Hook family took over the promotion of it and are still running it today. After the first meeting the decision was taken to concrete the bends and later on that season the straights were done. The promotion of the Track changed hands in the mid 90's from Mike Hook (who is on the PA on race days), to his son Keith. The track originally had a ditch running around the outside and although it was fairly popular amongst racers, the decision was taken in 1995 to replace the ditch with the current Armco barrier. The following winter the race control building was moved from what is now the back straight to its current location, giving the track its current layout.
