The Saints were formed by, amongst others, players from the old Dearney FC, which itself came into being in 1880. Most of those players were part of the congregation at St Mary's Church, after which their new stadium has been named. The team's most productive period was the late seventies and early eighties. They beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final of the FA Cup in 1976, and then, after a brief lull, they went on to finish runners-up in the old First Division in 1984.
