'We saw the Marquis deal on Travelzoo, and thought it looked ionteresting.We are not foodies, but I am an oenophile-specialising in lower priced wines, I should add.After a short misunderstanding with the enthusiastic waiter who greeted us,(he thought we were just eating) the service was sublime.(After a lifetime in service industries, I am in a position to judge). Every member of the team, from restaurant manager to cleaner/breafast waitress/chambermaid, really had bought into a very strong, 'make the customer feel special' culture. The food, the 4 course Kentish taster, was delightfully cooked and beautifully presented.The wine list was extensive, and offered a reasonable price entry point, about on a par with the food price list, which, although at a fairly substantial price, offered good value, given its superb quality. The eating and drinking experienmce is at a price pont that means for special occasions only for most people, but what a special occasion! The rooms were stylish and exceptionally comfortable, with good quality linen and beds, a good TV, and sparkling clean. Lots of storage space, too, with a good sized wardrobe. The National Trust bit is because Kent, apart from being a lovely county, offers a large number of NT properties, ands, of course, Dover Castle will tempt you to join English Heritage as well-we thought it incredibly interesting and well wort a day of anyone's time.'

'We stayed in the Grooms Cottage for one night as part of a mid-week special offer. We could not fault the experience from start to finish (apart from the appalling weather, but this was not the hotel's fault!). The staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating, everyone was aware of which room we were in and which package we were on. The dinner was superb as were the matching wines (with explanation by the sommelier for each one). The cottage was gorgeous, we were two couples so it was absolutely perfect as we were able to chill out in the afternoon before getting ready for dinner in the evening. The hotel arranged for taxi transfers between the cottage and the hotel for dinner as the cottage was a little bit further away than expected. Breakfast the next morning was great - freshly squeezed orange juice and a fantastic range of cooked breakfasts were available. I would love to visit again and will be recommending it to everyone!'

'Everything was superb, the room , the service, the food divine. I would give the hotel 4.8 out of 5 due to the smallinconvenience that when I booked by phone I asked for a twin room but had a double on arrival with my daughter and it took a long time to organise another room for us. But the room was gorgeous, it was arranged with disabled access and facilites but these meant we had a larger room and direct access to the pretty church and adjoining lane. We had a set menu as part of our package. We did not like some items but the waiter carefully checked what we might like and the chef substituted dishes, each of the 5 courses was delicious, best meal I have had and I have eaten in some very good hotels etc.'

'We recently spent a very happy night at the Marquis on a special dinner, bed & breakfast package. Easy parking in the carpark, friendly welcome. Our room was the superior room Drellingore which was very stylish and lovely and warm (very welcome with all the snow outside!). Very comfortable bed, large flat-screen TV with freeview and DVD player (good selection of DVDs available to borrow), kettle, biscuits, nespresso machine with lots of nespresso pods of all different types, bottled water, bathrobes. Room was quite small, and small windows so no view, but it was cosy and big enough for us. Underfloor heating in the large bathroom, huge bath from which you could see the TV (bathroom is open-plan, toilet and shower are in cubicles whilst the bath is in the middle of the bathroom area with a partial clear glass partition to the rest of the room - shouldn't be a problem since the room is a double and not a twin so presumably would only be chosen by couples). Nice toiletries. Plenty of towels, lovely hot towel rail. We started our dinner with a cocktail in the bar (recommend the imaginative Kentish fizz!) and canapes, followed by a 4 course taster menu in the comfortable and stylish restaurant. The food was out of this world - as a veggie I was blown away - much better than i've eaten in many a 5* hotel. The wine choice was excellent, and many good wines were offered by the glass for a change (they even offered smaller "taster" glasses - good way to try several different wines), including both old world and new world, together with local English wines. The waiters and sommelier really knew their stuff. The cheeseboard was also excellent and the portions were very generous! Service was attentive but discreet, not too fast or slow, and all with a smile. It was great to only have to walk 1 minute back to our room, for an excellent nights sleep. Breakfast next morning was one of the best continental breakfasts that we've ever had - great selection and quality.'

'We stayed at the Marquis last year for one night but as this year was our 10th wedding anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves to two nights and take advantage of the special offer on the hotel's website to have the Tasting Menu for half price! We had also treated ourselves to a suite and it was worth every penny! The De Pamier suite was comfortable, warm and had everything we needed. The bed was huge and soooo comfortable, it was a struggle to leave it! The shower was amazing, although the ceiling is low in certain places due to the age of the building and my husband couldn't quite stand up straight under the massive shower head. I had no problems! Having eaten in the restaurant during our last visit, we knew we were in for a treat for the Tasting Menu and we were not disappointed. Before dinner, we had a cocktail in the bar. The Raspberry Royale could prove to be dangerous, as it was so delicious, you could quite easily forget it was alcoholic! We also chose the Sommelier selected wines to compliment the menu and that was possibly the best choice we could have made! The Sommelier really knows his stuff! One choice of drink did make us look at each other in slight disapproval as it was a local cider, which seemed an odd thing to have with rabbit, which goes to show why the Sommelier does that job and not us! It was such an amazing combination and the cider with the rabbit was inspired. With each course and each selected wine/champagne/cider, the food just seemed to get better and better and the grande finale of Banana Souffle with a home made toffee sauce had the pair of us fighting over the sauce to try and drink it from the jug! The following morning, we awoke to discover snow and quite a bit of it ! The hotel is set back from the road, with a steep and sweeping entrance to the car park. However, nearly every member of staff was out in force, shovels and spades in hand (including the Head Chef). They cleared the entrance to the car park and made it accessible and safe. Before we left, they had even cleared the snow all around and off our car for us! Every member of staff is friendly, helpful and knows exactly what they are serving you, whether it's food or drink. Most of the ingredients they use are locally sourced and all are presented beautifully but without being over the top. It's such a cosy, comfortable hotel that you really feel like you're "home".'

'This really is a gem of a place. It's difficult to decide whether the accomodation or the resturant has the edge as both are of a high distinction. We were allocated a superior room, which had eveything you would expect from a boutique hotel in a city such as London. (The only minor comment I would make is that the bedside lamps are not good for reading). Even though everyone was extremely friendly, service was great and food was faultless we felt a little 'left out' The people around us got canape with their predinner drinks which were brought to them. We had no canape and my husband stood at the bar to order our champagne. The people around us were offered the special, we were not. I told my husband that you had probably run out, but then a simple, apology that you had run out would have sufficed. 'My friend found this hotel on the internet by chance and it was one of the best hotel stays we have ever had! It was booked for 3 couples who meet annually for a Christmas treat. First impressions, superb stylish decor in and around the Hotel. Staff with impeccable manners, experience in their field and knowledge of the local area. (For Walking) As a person with an Allergy to Garlic I asked to speak to the Chef on arrival as we planned to eat that evening in the restaurant. Chef Charles, a charming man, took me through all the things that had garlic in there preparation but as the rest of the table wanted the Taster menu, he adapted it specially for me so that I wasn't left out. It didn't disappoint either, we chose the wine option to go with our meal and it was mind blowing to say the least! 'Honestly, I never take the time to write reviews. My only fear in writing this one is that the next time I want to stay/eat they will be fully booked. I should tell you that the rooms were awful and the food terrible but only so I can have the place to myself! In all honesty the entire experience from arrival to departure and taking in an evening meal and breakfast was fabulous. 'As a birthday gift we were given a voucher for Dinner and B&B at the Marquis by our son who lives abroad. We found our room very comfortable indeed. The little orange and green ducks in the fabulous bathroom had difficulty swimming and were in danger of drowning but we saved them. 'An excellent establishment. Amazing location with lovely country walks and beach walks a short distance away which was exactly what we wanted. Food of the highest order, unhurried and relaxed atmosphere complemented the courteous staff and delightful menu. The en-suite room was lovely. I would change the lighting to allow the toilet to have a separate light instead of having to turn on the entire en-suite lights which wakes up the sleeping partner , I would also add squirtey soap to the bathroom - but these are very small quibbles. I would also add a mat to the entrance of the accommodation corridor. After a lovely walk in the local area we came back a bit muddy with our walking boots. Took em off and walked barefoot but a scraper and mat might be in order to save your new carpet!! Talking to staff when we booked out and they mentioned the Nailbourne room as the disabled room only just being finished on time. We had peeked into that room on arrival as the door was open and thought it was a great size. In london that size would make it the highend room, for you guys it was the disabled access room which is a great way to view things and is a credit to your establishment. Word of mouth led us to you and we will endeavour to pass on the highest recommendation to all who will listen! To the staff and chef thank you. 'We had a most enjoyable weekend at the Marquis. The Groom's COttage is well-fitted out and very comfortable, with stylish, quality furniture and fittings. It was a pleasant surprise to find daily cleaning services, though the staff could be better in the supply of soap, towels, tea-towel etc. The continental breakfast supplied to us was extremely generous and all items were fresh and delicious, in particular the freshly-baked bread and croissants. OUr two dinners in the restaurant were very enjoyable, with competent treatment of excellent local ingredients. (The pace in the kitchen could be improved to avoid the very long wait between courses.) Most of all, service from all members of staff was wonderful, very warm and welcoming and knowledgeable about all aspects of the restaurant. 'We had a lovely stay at the Grooms Cottage, owned by the Marquis hotel. There were 3 of us plus a small well-behaved dog. The cottage is nicely furnished, modern and with a very well-appointed kitchen. There was lots of interesting wildlife coming into the garden area - we saw rabbits, squirrels and even a stoat and a partidge! Fab! At Canterbury Cathedral we also saw a bat. :) The staff at the Marquis were super friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble. Very good value indeed and really the sort of food that you would pay twice as much for in a michelin star restaurant in London. The sommelier was worthy of a particular mention. He was friendly and incredibly knowledgeable indeed about both wine and cheese. The cheese board was fantastic and definitely worth a look. The accommodation is fine but it is really the restaurant that is worth the trip. Definitely one to watch in the future. We would very much recommend it.'

'What a lovely surprise to find such an excellent establishment in darkest Kent! We just wanted a very short getaway and this was the perfect choice. We arrived at a busy lunch time and how nice to be acknowledged with a smile by the staff as soon as we walked in, even though they were busy with other things. We soon enjoyed a light lunch (the Marquis bouillibaisse was ouststanding) and a restful afternoon. The evening meal was also excellent, as was breakfast the following morning. 'What a find the Marquis is. An attractive bar and a delightful welcome. Groom's Cottage is lovely, even in the depths of winter. The tasting meal was truly delicious, the tiny steamed haggis and the trio of salmon particularly fine. And the charming young lady who acted as our taxi driver even doubled as a milkman. Very good value, too - even better than we thought, as we'd been told on booking that the dinner would be charged extra. Very nice surprise! We'll certainly be back.'

The evening meal exceeded our expectations - very good cooking indeed. The lady in charge that evening was superb - very good with customers, confident, friendly and struck exactly the right note. Breakfast had really nice touches - selection of newspapers, REAL tea and REAL orange juice!! These aren't difficult to provide - but its amazing how few hotels actually provide them. My advice: keep doing what you are doing: the standards that you are providing set you apart from many of the rest.'

The excellent service comes as standard, fine dining at an affordable price. Nothing was too much trouble. This staff appeared to enjoy working there and were knowledgeable about both the wine and food being offered. The rooms are beautifully appointed, and very chic, with views from the windows of Alkham in all it Autumn glory a wonderful way to say Hello to the day. The food is some of the most delicous I've ever had and mouth wateringly presented(don't let that chef escape!). The staff are warm, welcoming and friendly, all contributing to an ambience of relaxed perfection. A lovely touch is the room dog that guards the door when you are 'at home' and guards the room when you are out, so much nicer that a 'Do not disturb' notice! 'I think the title better describes the place - the food should be your first reason to be here, with a night in the lovely rooms on top to follow. We came here straight after work, so that we could cross the channel the morning after - a great way to start our holiday and quickly leave all stress behind. The only problem?
