'Beautifully renovated pub which is now a restaurant/hotel with a large selection of mainly fish dishes.(hard to find these days) Great deals on Sundays and Mondays for DB&B. Comfy large beds with crisp linen, huge bathroom and amazing power shower. But the food is the jewel in the crown. Staff are welcoming, friendly and attentive without being intrusive - a credit to the management.'

Any "witch" way you look at it, the Thorn is a great place.
5 stars 5

'I whisked my wife away to the Mistley Thorn for her birthday. We went sans kids (although they do have family rooms) and I booked room+dinner+breakfast. We eat out a lot, so can get a bit jaded, but the food at the Thorn was irresistible - tasty, seasonal, local, good balance of meat and seafood (try the oysters!). The service is among the best I've experienced - relaxed, genuinely friendly, well-informed and uber-helpful. Price-wise, a pleasant surprise. Too often, outside of London, we've encountered restaurants that charge London+20% prices for London-50% quality. Certainly not the case at the Mistley Thorn. Mains are in the low teens range and the wine list starts below £15 and ends around £30. My only minor gripe is that I booked (online) a suite, but they clearly over-booked as we ended up in the top floor of the separate Mistley Appartments, and I wasn't given any warning of that or in fact acknowledgement that it had happened. They did knock the relevant amount off the bill though. Mistley itself is beautiful and has some great walks along the estuary, through the countryside or round the village. It is also steeped in history, being home to some classic Robert Adam Georgian architecture, as well as a Civil War battleground and the Thorn itself having been owned by Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General. If I lived around here, I'd eat here every week. For a romantic or family trip, I like to think we'll be back many times.'

fresh air, fish and fine diningng
5 stars 5

'Mistley Thorn is a gem in the Essex Estuary not its proper name am sure) with meandering walks along the River Stour. It is a haven for fine dining with lots of fresh fish options. The service was gracious and showed initiative. The rooms have all home comforts, commodious and the beds excellent with lovely linens (always a quality benchmark!). The porridge for breakfast was of the best and the intimate inn-like intimacy leaves a warm glow(helped by the porridge no doubt!). Only an hour from London this is a great little escape and value for money.'

Lovely time
5 stars 5

'We had a very enjoyable time at the hotel. The food was superb and the room was excellent apart from the height of the bath which for 2 fairly small people was difficult to climb in and out of. However this was a minor point and did not adversely affect our stay. The staff were very helpful and courteus and we hope to stay again in the future.'

'After a covinient bottrip from Hoek of Holland we arrived after sunset in harwich. Driving in the dark to Manningtree is Quit an experience because of narrow road en driving on the left side. We were very happy to land after the short trip in The Mistley Thorn. The welcome with a delicious meal and a nice room gave us a safe and worm feeling. For everybody who arraives from Holland at the same time the only and therefore best suggestion. Otto Nelemans'

wonderful place
5 stars 5

'We had a lovely night's stay in Feb 13. For one of the coldest w/e's of the year, it was so warm and comfortable and a great place to come back to & warm up. We did the dinner and 1 night stay offer and dinner was fabulous, great food, my partner's comment about dessert was 1 of the best they have eaten for years! Lots of fresh fish, we had 3 types of salmon, mussels for starter, both great, steak and lemon sole for mains and the capichino & choc ice cream desert. Room large, very comfortable, great views. Good fry up for breakfast. I would definately recommend this and go again. The only issue we had was the bill when we were charged £7m too much on the basis of the previous offer and not the new one but once pointed out, they apologised quickly and redid the bill.'

A gem on the Stour
5 stars 5

'WE would struggle to find any criticism of The Thorn and its sister Luccas in Manningtree- ambiance, comfort and service were top class and the food was superb. Sadly the weather let us down but the management had no control over that. This small hotel restaurant combined the best of Britsh food and facilities with an Americam commitment to excellence which was heart warming. I have had 25 years experience in the hospitality industry and know how hard it is to train staff to high levels of service and even harder to maintain commitment and motivation. Congratulations and we shall look forward to visiting the Thorn again soon.'

'This hotel was chosen partly due to its dog-friendly reputation. However, having visited we can say the Mistley Thorn has much more to offer than that. They are dog- friendly and our Labrador was certainy made very welcome but this is an excellent hotel and restaurant for anyone.
