'The Greyfriars Lodge is ideally set in the heart of Canterbury, a short distance to the high street. We found the Lodge friendly and has historic value and the rooms were big enough for a huge bed plus the normal associated with a room. We had a relaxing and enjoyable break.'

Two days in Canterbury
4 stars 4

'We enjoyed the large familyroom with a refrigerator that could keep our drinks cold. The temperature was rising up to 30 degrees C. (And because of the hot weather) this room lacked a good working shower. There was only a bath. The landlady placed a fan in the room which was very attentive. Breakfast is very good, a wide selection.'

Excellent location and friendly staff, baths could use an update
4 stars 4

'Very accommodating and friendly staff and an excellent location out balance the fact that the interior could do with a little renovation, particularly the bathrooms. That said, we were very happy with our stay while passing through Canterbury and felt the good price fairly reflected the fact that hotel interior is a bit old. Especially the staff made it memorable, very helpful and warm-hearted.'

5 stars 5

'This small guest house is right in the centre of Canterbury within easy walking distance of all the main sights and also both train stations. Our room was clean, spacious and well equipped. The buffet-style continental breakfast had a wide range of things to choose from along with a fresh cafetiere of coffee. All this at a very reasonable price. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend.'

Comfort with a smile
5 stars 5

'We took the last remaining room, a 4 person room. It was well-appointed, with good quality linen, plenty of coffee/tea/biscuits/etc, reasonably comfortable bed and a reasonable size bathroom. The room was quiet as far as hotel noise was concerned, with some low level Saturday night noise from outside, but not as much as we had feared, given the hotel\'s central city location. Breakfast - a real feast. Continental only, but there was absolutely everything one could have wanted, and more. Good quality cafetiere coffee. The two staff we saw were delightfully helpful. All in all, nothing really to fault, but plenty to praise.'

'Stayed overnight when attending Uni Open Day with my daughter. Only downside to be so central was thumpy music in the distance till 2am, but it was a Saturday night. Nice helpful staff, continental breakfast adequate. Single beds had nice bedding but mattresses desperately need replacing! Free Wifi which was welcomed by my daughter. Would stay again if she goes to the Uni, but ask for different bed if possible. Reasonable rate for what was on offer and good location. No parking but we used the Sturry Road Park & Ride.'

Great central location with really friendly staff
4 stars 4

'Booked a family room ahead of taking our son to the university so we had lots of big bags. The staff were brilliant as soon as we arrived helping us with parking and carrying nearly all of our bags up to our room. The room itself was spacious with a huge double bed & 2 singles. The small fridge in the room and tea fascilities were welcome. The hotel is right in the centre of centre of Canterbury, great for site seeing in this beautiful city. There was a good choice for breakfast & this set us up for our day. If there is just one thing that would have improved our stay it would have been having a shower rather than bath with shower attachment. (That\'s the only reason I have given 4 stars not 5) But for our one night, this hotel provided us with what we wanted.'

OK for a weekend getaway
3 stars 3

'We stayed one night here over the weekend. The staff were very friendly and helpful, room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. It is quite noisy at night (there must be a nightclub across the road), though they do give you ear plugs so this helps a little bit. The bathroom seemed to smell of sewage at times, which wasn\'t particularly pleasant, and the bathroom fan is very noisy and stays on for a long time. Overall not bad for one night, but could be better.'

'The location is excellent for Canterbury centre. The staff are very friendly and efficient and the breakfast had an excellent choice. The room, though, looked a bit \"tired\" and the bathroom definitely needed modernising. The bathwater only trickled out and was either scolding or bitterly cold. 'We had room.no.1 which was cozy and quiet, which reflects the ideal centralised location. The room was noisy, however, from constant internal floor creeking from surrounding rooms. The window catches are broken, resulting in having to lock them at night for security purposes which leaves the room hot and airless. The continental breakfast choices were good, with plentiful stock...tho the coffee quality was questionable. Overall, comfortable enough...but on reflection, overpriced for the experience.'

One night in twin room
4 stars 4

'I would love to give this little B&B 5 stars and I fear the only reason I can\'t is out of their control. The B&B itself is easy to find on a side street off of the main highstreet, simply ring for assistance and someone appears. The staff were extremely helpful and very courteous. The rooms themselves were old style with modern comforts and effort has been made to keep them up to date (alarm clock radio with idpod dock, wifi, freeview TV etc) and the bathroom very clean. The only trouble I had (when staying on a Sunday night) was wholly due to the proximity of the night clubs etc in the town the music was loud and made it difficult to get to sleep. The room was a little pricey (85 pounds for a twin room) which is equivalent to some high star hotels but what you pay for is the convenience of being right in the centre 10 minute walk from a major train station. I will definitely stay there again.'

'Nice place close to main attractions, staff very kind. Careful with the stairs if you are eledery people. 'Really convenient for the town/cathedral. Lovely room, public areas tired, although everywhere very clean. Very steep stairs, not good for limited mobility. Really lovely staff. Breakfast had a good selection of everything a continental breakfast should include. Top floor room has macerator toilet which is extremely loud and a very small shower,ok for overnight stay but wouldn\'t recommend longer.'

'Clean comfortable room. Adequate for what we wanted (just a bed for the night after a night in Canterbury). Warm cosy bed with en suite. There was a little bit of street noise up to the early hours but not enough to bother me. A good breakfast selection included the following morning. Good location for the city centre. I would consider staying again.'

Small but comfortable and friendly

'Just needed somewhere in Canterbury to stay overnight in transit to a holiday abroad. Wanted somewhere central and not too expensive and found the Greyfriars Lodge which seemed to fit the bill - and it did. My room was small but had all I needed and definitely had character. Ownen did warn me about the possible street noise and even provided earplugs (but I had my own). In spite of this did get a good night\'s sleep and then enjoyed the continental breakfast'

'Had an excellent weekend using this hotel. It\'s in a prime location and this Grade II listed building has lots of character; don\'t expect modern furnishings akin to premier inn etc, expect wooden beamed ceilings and a creaky floor board here and there. The hotel staff were very nice and accommodating, and the continental breakfast was suberb - all branded foods/drinks and no limit to what you could have. Will stay again'

a great nights sleep and an excellent breakfast

'Upon arrival we were a little concerned, the outside looked run down and was practically opposite a nightclub with another bar on the corner. However once inside we had a warm welcome, the room was lovely and we were given earplugs, the beds were comfortable and we both slept alot better than expected. Breakfast was amazing, a huge continental selection which was perfect for us before the long drive home. When parking we paid £10 for all night until 7am but were told when we got there that we could\'ve brought a permit from them for £6 until 10am so anyone going just pay an hour then go get a permit from the hotel!! Very impressed with the hotel, the staff and the breakfast 😊'

'The staff at Greyfriars are outstandingly good. They made up our room early to allow us to change and attend a wedding. They all were most helpful and attentive throughout our stay. The bed was large and comfortable. The free continental breakfast was first class. However the bathroom facilities were a joke.A caravan would offer more room. The wash basin was smaller than a pudding dish and the kettle was too big to go under the tap.Sadly a disco opposite the hotel meant sleep before 3am was not possible.'

Friendly staff, good location, but tiny room
3 stars 3

'As a solo traveller, location ranks high on my criteria and this hotel is centrally located close to all the major attractions and within walking distance of both train stations. There is a pub across the street, so there\'s the potential for it to be noisy at night, but I didn\'t really notice it. The staff were friendly, but my one major complaint would be that everything in the room (except the bed) was too small. I booked pretty late, so ended up with a double bed, but it took up so much room that there was barely any space to move around. I didn\'t even use the far side of the bed because the only access would have been over the top of the bed. The sink in the ensuite bathroom was tiny. In fact, it was so small that the kettle wouldn\'t fit. I had to fill the kettle from the shower! There was a nightstand for me to work on my laptop, but it was so small as to be barely usable for this. If you just need a bed and a roof, this is a good choice, but be sure to travel light.'

'I always look for unfussy accommodation in the centre of the town I\'m visiting - in this case, close to the theatre. The advantages at night are obvious: plenty of people around, plenty of light. The disadvantages are potential noise. Greyfriars deals with this by supplying earplugs and double glazing (but you can\'t expect to shut it all out). Other pluses are the friendly staff, and excellent continental breakfast (I\'d suggest adding a bowl of hard-boiled eggs, as they do in Europe, for those who like a savoury breakfast). My room was small, but the bed was large and comfortable and the tiny bathroom worked perfectly. I\'d suggest a refurb of the stairs as a way of welcoming visitors - worn stair carpet is depressing and potentially dangerous; also the scuffed handrail needs painting. Eventually replacing the dark wooden furniture in the room with a modern unit will make it look lighter and more spacious - could even fit a chair! Free wifi worked well. The breakfast/sitting-room is comfortable and light and the garden is a \'must see\', even in winter: the river and ruins are a glorious surprise.'

Disappointed
2 stars 2

'I stayed at Greyfriars with my mum for just one night. We had a twin room which was very shabby, and poorly decorated and furnished. There was just one power point with an extension lead attached, which meant the kettle(which could not be filled in the sink as it wouldn\'t fit under the taps!) had to be moved and placed on the floor to boil - not very safe or convenient. There were no headboards on the beds and the sheets didn\'t fit well so they came untucked during the night. The ensuite was cupboard sized and the shower was the worst I have ever experienced - it was impossible to wash as the water trickled out at a very slow pace. This definitely needs a pump! The B and B is situated opposite a very noisy bar/restaurant which played loud music until 2am, followed by another hour of noise from people leaving the bar and standing and chatting. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice and the staff were very friendly.'

A fine place to stay
5 stars 5

'Reasonably priced, clean, fresh smelling sheets, good mattresses. The outside street can be noisy late on Fridays and Saturdays, but otherwise the location is excellent. The car park is a bit of a trek, especially in bad weather. Cold buffet breakfast adequate, would like a least a boiled egg on offer. I\'ll use it again, there is a 4 bed family room which is ideal for a teen trip or a budget conscious family. Very helpful and friendly staff. The 5 star rating is an holistic assessment, not a luxury based one. It is excellent at what it does and for what it offers.'

'The manager & staff were all friendly and helpful- offering to carry bags; providing wide variety of gluten free options for my son. The Lodge is 150 meters from high street restaurants (and directly opposite a pub serving local traditional foods). The Cathedral is approx. 3 minutes away on foot. Outdoor, but CCTV-protected paid parking is also 3 minutes away.'

'We came to Canterbury for 48h, to see friends, to do some shopping and especially to be present at the Cathedral for the feast of St Thomas à Becket, 29th December. The hôtel was excellently situated for all of this, the welcome was sincere, friendly, complete; rooms were clean and equipped with the necessaries for the stay. All the staff were pleasing and welcoming as well as professionally efficient.'

Decent B&B in the heart of Canterbury
5 stars 5

'Booked the quadruple room for four lads. Nice old building. Welcoming and helpful staff. Good room size and amenities. Good continental breakfast selection. Above all were the excellent beds - akin to being swallowed by a pillow monster, yet allowing just the right amount of cool so as not to be stiflingly hot. Would go there again.'

4 stars 4

'The location and hotel are great. On saturday-night I had to sleep with earplugs in because there is a danceclub nearby, first the receptionist didn\'t seem much understanding, but after a while they understood why we thought they should have mentioned it on their website. Feedback after a recent stay.
4 stars 4

'Friendly, helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble, breakfast was lovely and filling - made a nice change from a cooked breakfast. Room was clean, fresh and warm enough. Location excellent. Only negative point was, we were in the ground floor bedroom next to the front door facing the street. Once woken up at 4.30 am we didn\'t get back to a sound, peaceful sleep. Which in fairness couldn\'t be helped.'

4 stars 4

'My mum and I shared a twin room when visiting my sister. We had the only ground floor room which was nicely decorated with an en suite bathroom. The beds were very comfortable with warm luxurious bedding. There were tea and coffee making facilities in the room, a freeview tv with DVD player. The free wifi was good. The only negative was that it was a little loud in the evening/ early hours as we went on a Saturday night, and it is opposite a pub/restaurant, but this is to be expected if you stay in the city centre, and greyfriars is a great location. This didn\'t really affect as though, as we were so tired. Breakfast spread the next morning was fantastic. So much choice: bagels, breads, brioche, croissants, muffins, branded individual cereal and porridge boxes, cereal bars, fresh fruit and toast. Would definitely stay here again. Donna the manager was really helpful too.'

'We spent 3 nights in this centric B&B and I strongly recommend it. The hotel is easy to find and well located (just 12 minutes walking from the train station and very close to the Cathedral and the main streets of the city). The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The room was clean and spacious. I have to highlight the breakfast with a complete offer of fresh products (such us fruit and yogurts) all of them in a serve-yourself affair. Finally, note that the staff alerted us about the noise at night that could be quite loud when the drunken revellers are falling out of the near bars (it was the Student Week!), but it didn’t actually trouble us.'

'My short stay at Greyfriars House was a pleasure. Although quite modest, i found everything to be very clean and cheerful. As an ancient building it had the inconvenience of lack of facilities for the less abled and this should be taken into consideration by the elderly, but, for now, I was alright and would like to return for a longer visit. Greyfriars Lodge, Canterbury
3 stars 3

'Greyfriars Lodge is conveniently placed to tour Canterbury, with the river Stour right behind, leading to the Greyfriars Garden. The staff members were really lovely, beds comfortable, and breakfast more than adequate. I would recommend asking for ground floor or first floor rooms in summer, as the third floor was incredibly hot in July. The stairs are steep, and this heritage building has no elevator, so it is not suitable for the physically challenged. Parking is 10 minutes' walk away and cost 6 pounds for 24 hours.'

'Our reception from Donna was very friendly and helpful. The bedroom was ready early. It was clean and tidy. Up 3 short flights of steep steps as it is a heritage building dating back to the13th century (we were in the 18th century extension I believe). the location was great right near the medieval heart of the city, shops restaurants and all the historic sights. The breakfast was well presented and had a good selection . The only downside was the ensuite in need of retiling and the shower pressure was disappointing. The bar/ restaurant across the road where we enjoyed a lovely dinner got noisy in the wee small hours of Sat. but that's expected when you are in the middle of town.'

Just the spot!
4 stars 4

'Was looking for accommodation that would not break the bank and local to Canterbury - Read your existing reviews and booked 3 nights - Perfect location, small but comfortable room, was warned that noise may be a problem on Saturday night, but was not disturbed. Continental breakfast was superb, friendly staff. Would not hesitate to book again.'

Nice but noisy

'Service was fabulous. Very friendly, efficient and flexible. Breakfast was delicious - lots of choice. Room was clean. BUT the street noise was very disturbing, with loud music, screaming, shouting etc well past midnight.'

Wonderful B&B
5 stars 5

'From the first to the end, the staffs of Grayfriars were so kind. Though we arrived too early, they were willingly welcomed us. And when our plan had to be changed because of weather (southeastern stopped all service), they helped us and did as much as they could, which was so touching. Wonderful location, clean room and nice breakfast. One thing I'd mention is it was so noisy outside when stayed, but that's not their fault at all.'

'Lovely staff. Great central location but also noisy because of that. Slightly tired fixtures and fittings especially bathrooms.'
