Great value & lovely B&B
4 stars 4

'Good value for money. Good location - about a 10minute walk into the city centre. Very friendly staff. Good breakfast - also very good value for money. Only downside for us was that the smaller room in the family room we booked was cold as the heating didn\'t seem to be working properly and the bedding was very light.'

Great stay, really central
5 stars 5

'We drove to Telstar and although car park tight to get into, it\'s great and very rare to have parking included with a stay that is so close to Exeter central. Receptionist was polite and showed us to our room which was clean and spacious for the 2 of us. Breakfast was fantastic and it was a very good price for where it is and what is included! This is my second stay there and I would really recommend this great Guest House!'

'Loved the decor, it is very quirky. The b&b is in a good location, offers parking and staff were friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was very good too. The only downside was that the en-suite was a bit snug. But that would not put me off returning next time I am in the area.'

'This is a very comfortable and welcoming hotel/guesthouse. On arrival I was greeted warmly and check in was very quick. The room was clean, warm and had everything you needed. Bed was very comfortable. The dining room and lounge are well presented, and the breakfast is a particular highlight. Great choice of full english, or your own combinations, as well as quality cereals, fruit, yogurts etc. Would definitely book again for both business and leisure.'

Our dogs were treated as paying guests too which was a pleasant change as all too often we are charged anywhere up to £25 per night, per dog just to let the dogs stay. Three night stay at the Telstar guest house
4 stars 4

'We had a great time staying at the Telstar Guest House. The house is cosy with a beautiful atmosphere - no luxury, but of course: you don´t expect this for the price. The breakfast was great (various options available) and the staff was super friendly! We had a double room (which was a little small) with a shared bathroom which wasn´t a problem because it was very, very clean. The Guest House has a great location - it´s only a ten minute walk into the city. We would definetly recommend staying at the Telstar Guest house. We didn´t have a car - but the tiny parking area looked a little crowded.'

Lovely Hotel and Staff
5 stars 5

'Stopped here for two nights in July. Excellent clean hotel, with friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is located a couple of minutes walk up the hill from Exeter St Davids railway station, and is only a 10 minute walk into the centre of town. I had booked a single en suite room, which was located at the front of the hotel. The room was small, but everything was spotless, the bed was comfortable and the shower was great. As the room fronted onto the main road, it was a little noisy from the traffic. However, it was very keenly priced, and exceeded all of my expectations. If I was to travel to Exeter again, I would certainly consider the hotel again as my accommodation. Highly recommended, and believe the reviews about the breakfast - it was awesome and also had an option to go large which I did!'

Lovely stay for a weekend in Exeter
5 stars 5

'My daughter and I stayed here last weekend. What a lovely place! We dropped our overnight bags off on our way from the train station and headed into Exeter which is only a short walk away. After lunch and shopping we walked back and were delighted with our room. It was very pretty, spotlessly clean, had a lovely view of the courtyard garden and the toiletries were fab! We really appreciated the ground coffee and cafetière in the room too. I mentioned that it was my daughter\'s birthday and a box of chocolates and some flowers were left for her - how thoughtful! We went out for dinner and cocktails - again walking in and out of the city and then had a wonderful night\'s sleep. Breakfast was perfect and we were able to leave our bags at reception whilst we enjoyed another day in Exeter, this time exploring the quay. I will definitely stay here again and have already recommended it to my friends.'

'Wonderful stay at the Telstar! We were greeted kindly and warmly and shown to our spacious, clean, room with a huge window and lots of natural light coming in. “Cute- Good price, good location, nice breakfast, very clean and comfortable,”
5 stars 5

'We booked this hotel for it\'s location and offer of a family room. It is very well placed for the town centre, train station and university. It was an easy check in with the lovely receptionist. It is really cute. A little courtyard with parking at the rear, and a little garden to catch the last of the rays. We were directed towards the town restaurants and were able to borrow a DVD on our return to watch in the room (extra blankets were supplied for us to snuggle up); the accommodation is immaculate. Spacious clean, quiet with a fab breakfast. I would stay here again & I would recommend it, although a bit of a squeeze for two large teenagers & two adults probably- It was OK for 3 of us- my son is 6ft 4\' and my daughter is catching up!'

Gorgeous Place and People
5 stars 5

'As a female, traveling alone in a foreign country for the first time, I found the Telstar to be the perfect Bed and Breakfast. The staff was warm and friendly and very helpful in helping me to negotiate my way around Exeter and the surrounding area. (I was collecting research for a novel and with their instruction didn\'t get lost once while visiting my intended destinations.) The daily breakfast was delicious, made to order, and cooked perfectly every single morning. Special requests were met with cheerfulness and an eagerness to please. I cannot say enough about the staff. They were all wonderful. I stayed a total of 11 nights at the Telstar and was quite sad upon leaving. The room I was given was fresh and clean with it\'s own bathroom and shower. The bed was almost too comfortable (hard to leave it at times!) Coffee and teas were provided in the room with an electronic kettle and refreshed daily. I feel very lucky to have found the Telstar and highly recommend it to everyone.'

'We had a lovely room in the Telstar overlooking the street and couldn\'t fault it. Very clean and comfortable. Staff most helpful and we were allowed to leave our bags in the room even though we were early. Breakfast v. good. 7 - 70 family weekend
4 stars 4

'15 of us, aged between 7 - 70 enjoyed our one night stay at the Telstar, and it was a fun time! Everyone was comfortably accommodated, the children loved that they could stay in rooms together rather than with Mum and Dad, and the breakfast was delicious. We were made to feel very welcome. Only downside for a longer stay might have been the en-suites, which were a bit cramped, but the characterful rooms were quirky and refreshingly different from the usual bland offerings in so many modern hotels. Thank you so much.'

Friendly, quirky and lovely!
4 stars 4

'After a number of stays in sterile hotel chains, the family-run Telstar was a breath of fresh air. The staff were friendly and helpful, and even provided a sandwich when I was unable to take breakfast one morning. And, wow, what a breakfast it is! Great choice of cereals, fruits, juices, homemade jams (Pam\'s strawberry is particularly scrummy!) and, of course, a full English. The hotel is excellently located for both main stations and the city centre. It has a quirky feel, like it\'s Mad Hatter decorations, and an admirable eco ethic. Rooms are immaculately clean and nicely furnished with a few practical touches: kettle, water, toiletries, chocolate (yay!). The bathroom in my room was compact - fine for me but my six-foot husband would have ended up with very bashed elbows! As the hotel is based in an old house, noise does travel, so bring your earplugs - and also an eye mask, as the curtains are a bit on the thin side. Apart from that, a faultless stay :-)'

'Your location is excellent for the University. The bedrooms are a little cramped as are the bathrooms so you probably wouldn\'t use the room except for sleeping. The beds are comfortable and generally it was pretty quiet. My 16 year old daughter didn\'t like the window from the shower looked out on the courtyard and had no blind! Great location, fantastic food very welcoming
5 stars 5

'My wife and 14 year old were in Exeter or 2 nights on out=r trip around the UK. Fantastic location with a very genuine and easy walk to the centre of town taking 5 - 7 minutes. Close to all the major sites and a very good selection of bars and restaurants. The parking is fine, yes a little tight but anyone with reasonable driving skills will find it no problem, and really little reason to use in Exeter unless you are venturing out of the city. The breakfast is amazing, they take real pride and trouble in presenting a high quality breakfast, great alternatives, plenty of food. Coffee was very good and a nice selection of juices- for two days we ate hardly any lunch due to size and quality f the breakfast. I thought the staff were particularly good, efficient, friendly, really made us feel at home. Value for money I would give it a 10 out of 10. We had the family room, two bedrooms, one bathroom with a nice small garden area with pleasant views at the back of the B&B. Very quiet and restful, ideal if travelling with a child (or two).'

'What a surprise. We stayed for one night and we were attracted by the high satisfaction rating on booking.com, the location and the price. The surprise was that we got so much more. The Telstar while looking a little drab from the outside, was great on the inside. The layout was quirky and full of character, our room was full of all the things we needed from a decent shower, a comfortable bed, a fan for the very warm night and real coffee, a huge bonus. There was veranda outside our room that gave us a great view of Exeter and beyond. The staff were helpful and approachable and the parking, while being limited and a bit tight, worked. I highly recommend the Telstar.'

'I stayed for two nights and enjoyed the Telstar. It\'s a close walk to town. The small car park worked out fine for us as we did get a spot; not sure how we would have felt had it been full, that would have been challenging. The staff was very friendly and helpful; Veronica gave us great suggestions for places to eat. The breakfast was tasty, home made bread a nice treat. Beds comfortable, rooms small but adequate.'

Pleasant and restful stay
5 stars 5

'We arrived mid Wednesday afternoon, with a hungry child, to a very pleasant and helpful welcome. Check in was a very quick process and the staff were very accommodating to our needs and told us the location of family friendly restaurants within walking distance. Located very close to Exeter St Davids train station, 2 minute walk away, even with a young toddler, and the city centre with a wonderful play park 5 minutes down the road at Bury Meadow Park. This was exactly the type of place that we were looking for. The only way it could have been improved is if the room had thicker curtains to block out the summer light in the early evening, although the beds were so comfortable that it did not impede our childs\' sleeping pattern. Finally I will highly recommend that you check out the breakfast special bread (sun dried tomato when I was their, beautiful) and the poached eggs were always cooked to perfection.'

Perfectly located midway between St.David\'s station and the Cathedral, this guest house is always welcoming, clean, peaceful and comfortable. 'Spent one night here with my daughter for a University Open Day. Great location for walking into the city centre or to the University. Whilst our double room (room 10) was small with a small ensuite shower room this was more than compensated for with the private and spacious balcony seating area right outside. The staff were all friendly and efficient with special mention to Vivienne on reception who couldn\'t have been more helpful from providing us with ice (for our drinks on the patio, to printing out something for us that I had forgotten to do at home. Breakfast was excellent. Lots of choice, quality ingredients well cooked and speedy but relaxed service. We were even given the OK to leave our car there whilst we visited the University. Would stay there again without hesitation. Thank you.'

'This is a small hotel in a good location. We stayed here while visiting Exeter University. We chose the hotel for the option for parking and it being equal distance from the city and the university. The room was very clean and we were upgraded to a family room which was a bit on the small side but very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent and the service was briliant. Being able to park our car after our departure time was a very welcome bonus . If I have any critisum it would be that its very close to the road and our room had a street light outside without blackout curtains. We will definitely be coming back to stay here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a couple of nights in the city.'

'I stayed for two nights with my daughter Roseanna attending Exeter College. I feel that the two best ingredients are the impeccable service and the incredible breakfast. We had a couple problems and these were dealt with by Ben who was extremely gracious, accommodating and did everything he could to sort in a manner that was outstanding. Often things can go wrong and it is not the fault of anyone, it just happens, but the way in which people react does them credit or a disservice. I had my faith in people restored with Ben as he was honest and sorted with the least possible fuss and will definitely stay again. In fact all staff were friendly, polite and welcoming. A real gem in Exeter.'

'The Telstar were great hosts. They went above and beyond for our comfort and well-being. They were friendly, genuine and attentive. The breakfasts were consistently good over the three nights stayed and the service was quick but not compromised. During the stay there we some hiccups which we beyond the control of the management (a broken boiler and power cut) which the staff dealt with expertly and effectively. It didn\'t disrupt our stay at all! The only minor niggle is that the shower water pressure was hit and miss, but overall not a major concern. Otherwise a really lovely place to stay and very, very comfortable at a good price!! Definitely recommend and will stay again!'

Accommodation for visiting Exeter University

'The Telstar was ideal for our one night stay in Exeter, as it was a very short walk from the university that we were visiting. The staff were very helpful with directions to the university and the town, which was also within easy walking distance. 'I really enjoyed my stay at Telstar, where I stayed for 13 nights in August 2015. The staff was extremely friedly, and the breakfast served... One could not have wished for more. The room was always clean. The hotel was quiet and the location perfect (near the centre and both St. Davids and Central stations). I warmly recommend Telstar and hope to get a chance to stay there some day again.'

Lovely and helpful

'Monica was lovely and helpful on our arrival, giving us clear information about where to go for an evening meal with 13 year-old twins and how to get into the city centre. The bedroom was very comfortable, well-stocked and clean with great décor. Breakfast was very tasty but, although we didn\'t arrive late, it took 15 minutes before our order was taken - other people\'s breakfasts were brought to our table by mistake and perhaps we should have just thanked them and eaten it.... When our order was finally taken, the waitress apologised for the oversight and was very considerate. We were able to leave 2 suitcases with Reception until our train later in the day. All round, a good stay with lovely touches and the staff were extremely helpful.'

'A conveniently located guest house in Exeter. The bedroom was immaculate, looking out on to St. David\'s hill. Downstairs, there was a living room, again in immaculate condition and plenty of reading material. The breakfast was very good. Probably one of the big selling points of this place is that most of their produce (eggs, milk, sausages etc.) is locally sourced. The staff were very helpful and the service was spot on. It is close to St Davids station in one direction and Exeter city centre in the other. Oh yes, and they also make bread!'

Tradition with some nice twists
4 stars 4

'The Telstar is a nice traditional guest house, conveniently located for the rail station, the University, and the city centre. The ensuite room was nice and the bathroom new and very good, although the water cut out in the shower a few times during use, strangely. The downstairs in particular is really nicely decorated so breakfast time is very pleasant, and a good cooked breakfast is included (vegetarian sausage option available, which is a plus for me). For an extra pound you can have coffee from what looks like a very fancy barrista machine. Overall great value.'

'I booked the Telstar at very short notice and was not disappointed. The room I was given was round the back overlooking the valley and was a good size. There was an ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet as well as a seperate room to the side. The "proper" coffee and cafetiere was a very nice touch as were the chocolates. The room was warm and I got a great night's sleep. Breakfast was wonderful, I only wish I was hungrier but I had bacon, scrambled eggs and grilled tomatoes as well as some toest and it was all well prepared and fresh. There was also some homemade bread on offer (cinammon and raisin if I remember rightly) but I didn't have the appetite for more! I would definitely stay here again and would like to say thanks for a lovely stay again.'

Brilliant - thank you : )

'We had a family suite - ideal for parents in one room and 2 daughters in the other. Bedrooms and bathroom very clean and nicely decorated - not like a chain hotel, simple yet charming. 10 minutes walk from the town and in a nice and fairly central location. Even better than the warm, friendly welcome, and excellent housekeeping service were the brilliant breakfasts. On a busy morning with the dining room full, between the four of us we had a full English breakfast, egg on toast, kippers and a croissant - four picky eaters catered for and we all left happy - possibly a first! Thank you - we'll certainly be back again when next in Exeter'

'We had 2 nights at the telstar whilst visiting the uni for an open day. It's within easy walk of the uni and the town centre so very convenient, staff were really welcoming and helpful. The accomodation was excellent especially liked that our daughter had her own room adjacent to ours and that there was decent coffee available in the room. Breakfast was lovely with some unexpected extras like the home made jam available - delicious. We would highly recommend this guest house and will return if our daughter gets a place in uni next year! Parking is tight but the owner was on hand when we needed to get out so there wasn't a problem.'

'Perfect location - not too far to walk from St. Davids with luggage and also close to the city. Rooms were comfortable and clean with nice decor. Everything we needed, we even watched a dvd from the collection available in the reception area until the rain stopped. The family suite was perfect for us as I was with my partner and my sister and there was a separate single room. Would stay there again.'

'A great location and a tasty extensive breakfast. A couple of small details for room 19 need to be addressed i.e. provide coat hooks in room, provide small towel holder next to basin and at breakfast, make sure the fruit salad bowls are regularily re-filled. The hospitality tray was great and the staff always curtious and helpful.'

Nice place to stay
4 stars 4

'I stayed at the telstar hotel for two nights and was pleased with my stay. It looks as though the Hotel/Guest House has recently changed hands and the young couple that now run the hotel provide a very friendly service, with very good breakfasts and warm, friendly service. My room was clean and comfortable the bed particulary so, but the decor needs a little touch up, although the soft furnishings were fresh and very attractive. As a single person at breakfast a couple of newspapers would have been nice. I would definitely return to the hotel.'

Cute, comfortable lodging with great breakfast!
5 stars 5

'The Telstar is a generally excellent little hotel with an intimate B&B energy. While it has many lovely features, I must first say that the best thing about it is the breakfast, which is far above average for this category of lodging. In addition to the usuals, you get a fully cooked breakfast for which you can mix and match a wide range of delicious items to-order. Everything is locally and ethically sourced. The hotel’s common rooms are really charming and decorated in a kind of vintage-meets-rustic-meets-“eclectic-ironic-urban-hip” (as my colleague put it), so they’re fun to hang out in and chat or get work done. The rooms were clean and cute, the bathrooms had updated and clean facilities and pleasant-smelling products, and the beds were comfortable. From my window, I had a really pretty view out onto the surrounding hills. Amy, Ben, and all the staff were lovely, nice, and accommodating. After vacating our rooms we had a 1-hour wait until we had to walk down to our train, so Amy and Ben served us tea in the beautiful common room.'

'I have stayed at the Testar three times now and only have praise to give: the rooms have beautiful decor and are spotlessly clean, with lovely touches like real coffee and cafetiere, quality toiletries, etc.; breakfast is utterly delicious; proprieters and staff are welcoming and very helpful. The location is also great, as it's only about five minutes from both St Davids Station and the town centre and the cost of rooms is more than reasonable for what you get. I'll be staying at the Telstar again the next time I visit Exeter and I would recommend it to anyone.'

'We had a very comfortable stay at the Telstar. Our family room was lovely and clean and there was sufficient room for the 4 of us. We did have a problem with ants in the bathroom on our first day, but that was quickly remedied with an ant trap. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice for us all. The hotel was like a tardis small to look at from the front but big inside. All the staff we met were polite and helpful and we would certainly return. Only thing that we disliked was the parking, very small carpark.'

Visiting Daughter at Uni
5 stars 5

'Staying one night at the Telstar was comfortable and enjoyable. In particular having a vial of fresh coffee with a small cafietere in the room is a lovely touch to coffee addicts like myself. I thought the breakfast was wonderful. Great selection of fruit and cereals including a nice cooked vegetarian breakfast (including veggie sausage) Its in a great location that is easy to find and there is car parking at the rear although quite tight. We went to the Turkish restaurant nearby called Dinos cafe and that was lovely plus you have a Wetherspoons called the Imperial within a stone's throw away.'

Wonderful Service
4 stars 4

'I stayed at the Telstar from the 22nd-27th October 2012. I was working with a Dance Theatre Company on an educational residency at Exeter College, therefore wanted my hotel to be close to the college. Luckily the Telstar was less than a 5 minute walk to my destination and just a short walk to the town centre. It was also the cheapest hotel I could find for my length of stay. The staff were friendly and attentive. One evening the shower wouldn't heat up. The staff helped me immediately and instead of making me wait for it to be fixed they let me use another bathroom. I later found they got a plumber in and the next day it worked fine. My room was small but had everything I needed. However, another plug socket would have really helped or an extension lead, as there was only one free socket. Another critism of the room was the curtains. There was a street lamp outside my window and the curtains were very thin and did an awful job of blocking the light. I tied a blanket in front of them two nights but this did little to help. Thicker curtains were definetly needed. Everything was kept spotless. I always came back to a cleaned, tidy room, the bathroom was cleaned daily and everywhere else was always tidy. Breakfast was at a good time and the food and service were lovely. There was a good choice of food and the radio was on in the background. The dining room linked to the lounge which had comfy sofas and a T.V. However, the T.V was old and sounded to be on its way out... My main critism of the Telstar was its very poor Internet connection. I could not get a connection in my room and even the signal downstairs was poor. However, I was told that they had just switched provider and it would take a while to settle. This was a big pain for me, though, as there was work that I needed to do each day that I needed the Internet for. Overall, I had a lovely stay, at a good price in a nice location close to where I needed to be. I would definitely recommend this hotel!'
