Excellent B & B in central Ambleside
5 stars 5

'Me and my girlfriend recently spent 4 nights at Smallwood House over New Years Eve. The B & B is superbly located in the centre of Ambleside. All shops, restaurants and the cinema are within a couple of minutes walk. The B & B itself is lovely. The rooms are spacious and clean, the owners are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is delicious. On top of that you get the use of a local leisure facility with a swimming pool, gym, sauna etc which is very welcome after a hard days walking. Overall we had a fantatsic stay and would definitely go back.'

New Year Stay at Smallwood
5 stars 5

'Lovely team of people, comfortable clean quiet rooms, power shower, great breakfast, dog friendly, access to a swimming pool, tolerant of wet muddy boots at the back door, located near to everything Ambleside has to offer (Cinema, Shops, Pubs and Restaurants) AND chocolates on New Year's Eve - what more could anyone want from a B and B. We will definitely visit again. Ray and Catherine'

Friendly b&b
4 stars 4

'Warm friendly b&b,lovely breakfast and good service , single room was warm and light ,only small downsides was i)Mattress on the well used side , ii) Sliding sash windows shake when the wind blows so had to "pack - out" the gaps. iii) Had to bend down a lot due to the slope of the dormer window'

Half Term break 2011
3 stars 3

'You are assured of a friendly, warm welcome from the Harrisons @ Smallwood Hotel,Ambleside. The plus is the central location, including the on site parking. My wife & I were able park for 3 days and use local buses, for walking & shopping etc.The food is plentiful and breakfast is excellent value. We feel the decor of our room, was dated, including the furniture and more thought could be given to lighting & the area given to tea & coffee facilities. However excellent value for money, particularly with the facility of using the local leisure club ie swimming, included at no extra cost.We will return in the future & thankyou the Harrisons.'

Top floor room for a top stay!
4 stars 4

'We booked to stay here for a one night/ Saturday only stay, despite the online booking saying a two night stay is needed for weekends (little hint: email them for availability, they are very accomodating and if they can fit you in for one night then they will!). We stayed in a double room with an en suite bathroom on the top floor/attic part of the hotel, which had a sloping ceiling over the bed and in the bathroom (anyone in the 6'0" region or more will have to mind their head when going to the toilet or getting out of bed). The room had all the basics - tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, TV with freeview channels and lovely smelling toiletries in the bathroom. The teddy on the shelf above the bed was a nice touch too. The bed itself was very comfortable so we had a great nights sleep. Breakfast is included in the price of your stay and with a wide choice of food available (toast, cereal, yoghurt, cooked breakfasts, etc) the hard part is deciding on what to have! The hotel is situated right in the town centre and two minutes walk from the main shopping area and local pubs for those who are looking at eating out. The only slightly disappointing thing about our stay was not being able to have a shower in our bathroom because of the low ceiling. There is a bath but for those who prefer a quick shower in the morning then the attic room isn't for you. Despite this we would happily recommend SmallWood House to anyone looking to stay in Ambleside.'

Excellent value.....
5 stars 5

'Smallwood Hotel is situated almost in the centre of Ambleside with shops and amenities virtually on the doorstep and yet within minutes you are in the countryside. Free car parking is provided in their large rear yard which in itself is a bonus. The proprieters, Christine and Anthony, make you feel instantly at ease with their welcoming and friendly manner. The room was well prepared, very clean with the en-suite (shower) having a selection of beauty lotions for the ladies to try.Tea and coffee making facilities were provided and the presence of modern r/c TV plus two comfortable chairs were an added pleasure. The large double bed was very comfortable. Breakfasts are bountiful with a large choice of courses to suit all tastes and all well prepared to suit.....lovely. This October was our fourth stay and before leaving we reserved our stay again for next year - need we say more......'

Weekend in October in Ambleside
5 stars 5

'We were very happy with the accommodation and breakfasts - all the attention to detail and all the help from our landlady in answering our queries about walks, etc. in the district made it a very pleaurable stay. The view from our bedroom was colourful because of the wonderful stone the houses and chimney stacks are built of, with craggy hills beyond - never mind the drenching rain! And the four poster was very cosy.'

Just the BEST!
5 stars 5

'I have been visiting this hotel for many years and have never stayed anywhere I enjoy more. The staff are great and nothing is to much. One great advantage this hotel has over others in Ambleside is that it has parking for its residents! A rare thing to find in the Lakes! Moverover, Ambleside is the epi-centre of the Lake District because you have to go through it, to get anywhere else. You'd be nuts to think of staying anywhere else than the Smallwood House Hotel!'

'Lovely welcoming atmosphere and a good base from which to explore the lakes. Our rooms were fine, with comfortable beds, although the duvets were rather too hot and some rooms are slightly small for very tall people! The toiletries in the bathroom were gorgeous - I recommend you also buy some to bring home with you. A highlight was the full use of the pool/gym/spa at a nearby hotel. Overall, a great place to stay and very pleasant people! Thanks.'

Excellent B&B
5 stars 5

'It's the first time we've stayed in a hotel / B&B with the kids (two children aged 5) but Smallwood House couldn't have been more accomodating. Lovely big room, all immaculately clean and nicely decorated. Central location meant we could pop out for a takeaway and eat it in the dining room, with a baby alarm to listen out for the kids. There is a bar, or you can BYO drink. Sitting room also available so you're not confined to your room. Fabulous breakfast with lots of choice. And very good value for money at £100pn for all of us. Doesn't take dogs but has a small private car park so they're safe in the car. If we're in the area again will definitely come back.'
