Rougemont Castle was built by William the Conqueror, and besieged a hundred years or so later by King Stephen. The gatehouse is the oldest castle structure still standing in England, and you can still see remnants of it�s banks and ditches in Rougemont Gardens, described by Victorian writers as 'a gem set in the heart of Exeter'. The same description could easily be applied to the Thistle Exeter, an elegant Victorian building in the centre of Exeter, with 90 bedrooms, including suites, a bar and restaurant. Located close to the mainline railway station, and with on-site parking available at just �5 for 24 hours, it�s also ideal for business meetings and other events, with 10 air-conditioned meeting rooms, the largest of which seats 300 theatre-style, to choose from.
