About Bedfordshire

With its southern borders only 30 miles from London, the County of Bedfordshire is the gateway to the Midlands and East Anglia. Set in a rich rural landscape, the county is an attractive place to live, work and visit.

The geographical county of Bedfordshire, which includes Luton, has a population of about 580,000. Bedfordshire County Council provides services for the area covered by the three districts of Bedford, Mid Bedfordshire and South Bedfordshire. This area has a population of about 390,000, with a fifth living in the historic town of Bedford on the River Great Ouse. In 1997 Bedfordshire's largest town, Luton, became a unitary local authority.

Luton Airport is the 7th largest airport in the UK. 6.5 million passengers used the airport in 2001. 78 per cent of passengers fly on scheduled services, 22 per cent on charter services. Aproximately 70 per cent of passengers are on international flights, approximately 30 per cent are on domestic flights. More and more cheap flight operators are scheduling flights form Luton so it just keeps getting busier and busier. The airport has a dedicated cargo terminal that handled 35,862 tonnes of cargo in 2001. London Luton Airport has an EU and MAFF approved airport border inspection post for livestock and handles numerous livestock and bloodstock flights. Some of the more unusual "freight" handled include 1000 sheep from New Zealand, 25 Cossack horses from the Ukraine and 470 Alpaca from Chile.
