About Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire is a patchwork of small stone villages and delightful rolling countryside. The oaks and beeches of the Forest of Dean dominate the south west, separated by the River Severn. Communities unchanged for centuries still rely on the woods. Touring this area is a joy, with a steady succession of charming 'wool' towns, like Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Campden, breathtaking scenes and views, and totally unspoilt villages like Lower Slaughter, Minchinhampton and Snowshill.

A county of much history and many royal connections (the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne hves homes here), Cirencester was a Roman town and offers Berkeley and Sudeley Castles, to name just a few of its many historic buildings and stately homes. Gloucestershire also has its fair share of historical buildings.

Gloucester is an important inland port on the River Severn, linked by canal to the docks at Sharpness 16 miles away. Roman Legions established a fortress here in AD43. Today the city's main roads still follow the pattern of the original roman roads designed by the daughter of Alfred the Great. Gloucester's main attractions are the House of "The Tailor of Gloucester" where you can view each and every episode of the famous Beatrix Potter tale, 2003 being the 200th anniversary of the story being published. The East Gate viewing chamber, Gloucester Cathedral which was founded 1300 years ago and which some younger visitors will recognise as "Hogwarts".
