This 16th-century inn is in the beautiful Wye Valley, in the cider orchards between Hereford and Hay-on-Wye. It has free on-site parking, free Wi-Fi, a traditional bar and a modern restaurant.
The Portway Inn is a traditional country inn. It is in quiet countryside on the A438, near Staunton-on-Wye and less than 10 miles from Hereford city centre.
The inn has been carefully restored and has original wooden beams, quiet gardens and a real log fire.
The large en suite rooms have TVs and tea/coffee. Some rooms have a traditional style and some are more modern.
The Portway Inn offers a seasonal menu, featuring home-cooked dishes made with fresh, local produce. Food is available in the traditional, oak-beamed bar and the modern restaurant.

All very pleasant. However, one comment for the owners - the (heavy) curtains in my bedroom came down the floor - nothing wrong with that - but they sat in front of the radiator - with the result that the rad' (with the curtains closed) heated the window - not the room. This is not to say that the rom was cold - but from an energy conservation point of view - it might be an idea to get the scissors out.

This was our second stay at the Portway Inn and everyone was just as friendly and welcoming as the last time. The rooms were clean, comfortable and warm and the waiting and kitchen staff were flexible and efficient, producing delicious meals for twelve of us time after time! Emma and Jade, (who switch effortlessly between bar, reception and restaurant) have now become honorary members of our "family" and are much loved by all of us. I suspect we may be back for a third time in 2019!

Despite stressing to the very helpful waitress that we both wanted the eggs soft and did not like hard eggs the breakfast was served with an ice hockey puck on each plate...
The evening meal was excellent and the cooking and use of fresh ingredients was highly evident....
The atmosphere in the bar was excellent and the staff were extremely professional but naturally friendly too.....

It was the 2nd time we stayed at the Portway Inn and we very much enjoyed our stay once again.
Such a great place to have a relaxing weekend. The rooms are spacious and comfy, the food is great - from traditional pub food to more elaborate dishes made with local or regional products - It is obvious that the chef takes great care in what he is doing. Whilst in a pleasant quiet area, the Portway is well situated near to Hereford, Hay-on-Wye and on the road to the Brecon Beacons.

Poryway Inn sits in a stunning location, surrounded by hundreds of acres of beautiful apple orchards which are free for people and dogs on leads, to walk around. There are amazing views from the Inn across the Wye valley to the hills beyond.
The bedrooms are lovely, the staff delightful and the meals were some of the best we have had in a long while.
The Portway is set in a perfect position for exploring Herefordshire, Shropshire and Wales. Hay on Wye is only a short and very scenic, drive. A heavenly little town with lovely shops, cafes and beautiful walks along the River Wye.
Will definately be going back to Portway Inn soon.

We enjoy the comfortable rooms, excellent customer service and delicious food. The lounge is an excellent place to relax. Room was comfortable, I had to have the window open due to the weather, but road noise was a problem, lorries make a surprising amount of noise when thundering past. Also the macerater in the room seemed to go off at various intervals in the night. I got up and flushed the toilet and that seemed to fix that problem, but they are always noisy when in use.
Breakfast the next morning was also delicious.

I chose the Portway randomly on booking.com as a 1 night stop over on my way from Liverpool to Devon , I was riding a motorcycle in very cold weather. I couldn’t have chosen a better place ,so much so I stayed another night.. very helpful friendly staff,very good reasonably priced food, a huge roaring log fire, warm room with extra heater if you wanted it roasting. Breakfast perfect in every way. very rural location surrounded by orchards, many walks , the river wye accessible close by, also interesting friendly locals in the public bar. everything immaculate including the staff , a very real characterful place. I will definitely stay again, ideal for bikers with miles of some of the best roads and countryside, end the day sitting on a big settee with a drink 4 ft away from the huge open log fire..perfect..

As soon as we walked through the front door and saw the exposed wall panels showing the interwoven wattle I felt right at home. Exposed beams, oak supporting pillar and even a horses skull under the floor, this hotel was interesting. we stayed at the Portway Inn for 10 nights spread over 3 weeks before and after Christmas. Have to say that all the staff were briliant and happy to help. The food was lovely, we ate there every night. The rooms we had were at the back and were large and comfortable and clean. My only negative comment would be the water pressure for the shower could be better. Other than than that we would definately stay again as its in a good location for mountain biking.

Portway is a warm, comfortable, clean traditional 16th century coaching inn in glorious countryside, which serves excellent food at reasonable prices. We chose to eat in the restaurant both nights and the menu choice was good, the food piping hot! Breakfast was plentiful and set us up for the day. We considered our stay to be great value for money and would gladly recommend the Portway Inn.

Stayed here For the night on Saturday 2nd April with my husband and our friends we had booked this for one of our friends Birthday as a surprise and we were not disappointed Dave the host was fantastic and made sure our stay was a pleasent and enjoyable experience! From choosing two lovely rooms down to a lovely table being reserved for us for our evening meal. He booked us in, served us at the bar took our dinner order in fact seemed to do everything we actually found the Manager quiet rude walking away from me as I approached to ask a question? Yet Dave came straight over and took over he was fantastic and I can't thank him enough for making my friends Birthday a memorable one. We stayed 3 nights at the Portway Inn with our two dogs. we couldn't have been better looked after or welcomed more warmly. From the moment we arrived, nothing was too much trouble. Dave, in particular deserves mention for looking after us so well. The room was excellent and very cosy, the food was superb, the local Wye Valley 'Gold' beer was brilliant and the surrounding countryside - mainly cider orchards - was glorious. A warm, cosy, tradtional style small hotel that accepts pets. Staff very friendly and attentive. Gives you that 'remote' feeling but you're not too far from a local village with shops, pub, post office, garage, etc. It has fast wifi connection but limited mobile phone coverage. Had a wonderful time at the Portway Inn. We loved it so much, we decided to stay an extra night. The Inn is quaint and traditional and is a great place to hang out (especially by the fireplace in the pub) if the weather is not nice enough to enjoy the beautiful countryside surrounding the place.
Our superior room had a lot of character - while being perhaps a little bit outfashioned it fits really well with the rest of the venue.(the shower however could have worked better - water was getting cold very quickly)
The staff could not anymore nice and helpful and were attentive to all our needs.
Brekfast was delicious and copious and the food served in the restaurant and pub for dinner was not far from being fine-dining level.
Only 20min drive from Hay-on Wye, where you can enjoy a full day (or 2) browsing through the bookshops.
Overall a very nice experience at the Portway Inn which I would recommend to anyone for a nice weekend away.

The hotel is exceedingly friendly and has a lovely atmosphere. The bedroom was very comfortable with a selection of duvets and pillows if required,in all our travels we have not had this. It is very clean though could do with a hanger in the bathroom for dressing gowns etc.There were also slippers for use, which we have only found in very up-market hotels before! The food was also excellent though my wifes peas were undercooked, but the meal was super. We will definately stay there again and recommend it to friends.

Just back from long weekend stay with our dog. Must say that it is always good to find somewhere that accepts dogs. We stayed in the family room as it was the last one available when I booked and it was ample big enough. Clean and tidy.
Breakfast was excellent very good choice and we ate in the hotel on the 2 evenings and the food was exceptional. Will definitely return.
Only downside was that the dog was not allowed in the pool room which was a shame as we found ourselves up in the room quite early whereas we could of enjoyed a game of pool as it was being used.

We had dinner and the entrees were good (pan fried scallops and monk fish) but we went for, pork loin and Welsh Lamb which were a bit bland, would order a more simple dish next time.

The room was presented beautifully and had met all our requirements and requests, the TV was watchable, bedroom& en suite were clean and hygienic. The staff were helpful and polite and well presented. The hotel as a whole had beautiful character and was lovely. It was in the middle of nowhere we had to drive to nearby towns but this wasn't a problem as we wanted to go to hay on Wye and it was only 15 mins from portway inn. The menu had a good choice and the food was very good, imaginative and perfectly cooked. The Sunday roast lamb was a very generous portion, and with the red wine gravy made a substantial evening meal. The wine list was well chosen and the wines we had excellent. The staff were amazing - nothing was too much trouble. The guy who checked us in even did it early and let his breakfast go cold. We left the luggage and he put in our rooms. There had been a mix up with the system and though we had ordered 2 single rooms, one wasn't available which meant one of us got an upgrade to a double with no extra charge.

We stayed two nights at the Portway Inn and had a very enjoyable stay.We had a problem with the room we stayed in the first night but the staff were amazingly helpful and our room for the second night suited us much better.
We ate both nights in the restaurant and the food was excellent but I ate too much, just could not resist it! We both want to say how marvellous, caring and efficient the staff were, we cannot praise them high enough, and because of them we will be back, but we hope that the dustbins wont be by the front door in the car park!

The Portway Inn was a welcome surprise after a long day visiting my brother in hospital. The pub was full of character and the rooms were ultra cosy. We ate in the pub and were pleased to find that the food was lovely and the service excellent. The bedsheets and towels all smelt beautifully clean. Breakfast was excellent with a very good choice including two fish options. For £49 for a twin room including breakfast it was an absolute bargin!

My wife and myself thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay at the Portway Inn. Manager (Kai) was particularly welcoming and nothing seemed too much trouble. Our first floor room was clean, tidy and well decorated. The minor downside was the thin adjoining walls thereby hearing unwanted sounds from the guests in the next room. Although the Inn is alongside a busy main road, we soon became accustomed to the background noise of the traffic. Enjoyed dinner, chosen from an extensive menu and breakfast the following morning was more than adequate. If I needed to stay overnight in the Hereford/Brecon area again, the Portway Inn would be my first choice.

we decided on a last minute short break and found this little gem of a place. Surrounded by beautiful countryside. The staff are very friendly and there was a lovly atmosphere. We were only here overnight bu it felt like a nice break. We are in the bar and had a relaxing evening. The room was comfortable although the running water in the bath was a very strange colour!! Breakfast was of a good standard. Whilst not a I would recommend this establishmet as good VFM and very comfortable. We visited Hay on Wye on the Sunday which was very pleasant.

Very good value for money, surprisingly good food and nice, friendly staff.
Our room was right at the back so nice & quiet (room 8) and it was comfortable, clean & tidy - even the shower was good. It could be taken upmarket with improved decor but as it stands the room was very good value for money.
One note of caution - be aware that it is a dog-friendly establishment which was good for us but may not suit everyone.

Part of the plan on the homeward journey was also to visit Hay. What a delightful experience it proved to be. An extremely friendly and well run establishment with the most comfortable beds. The service from arrival to departure was exemplary. From the welcoming staff at breakfast to the same warmth at dinner, surpassed only by the varied menu and well cooked food at both mealtimes. Of the 5 hotels we stayed at on our odyssey, this was by far the best. Our puppy was made most welcome and enjoyed time running in the lovely gardens. Booked on line whilst travelling and got a very good deal. The staff were most friendly and helpful. Comfy bed. Nice big bath. Good food.
One small criticism .. To get to reception you are directed past the kitchen and toilets along a narrow corridor which does not give a good first impression

Being first time visitors we were pleasantly surprised to encounter first class accommodation in beautiful surroundings. The welcome staff were brilliant as were all the staff and the rooms very nice. quite strange to have a floor so sloped. We had a rear bedroom so the road noise was quiet. The food was excellent. We would certainly stay again. Thank you.

My mother and I have had an excellent and enjoyable stay at the Portway Inn recently. The staff were all very attentive to our needs and genuinely interested in making us feel as welcomed and relaxed as possible. The food and cleanliness is fantastic and I would definitely recommend to stay here whilst exploring the Herefordshire countryside.

The room was really big, comfortable and clean. The age of the building (a proper old inn) means the room had real character (including a very slight slope in one part, which was quirky!). Although just off the main road, there was absolutely no noise and we slept well. The pub itself was fine for a coupe of drinks (we didn't eat there in the evening but the breakfast was very good). We booked on the day of arrival and got a brilliant deal too, half the price of many similar places in the area.

A very friendly welcome,a nice clean room and larger than usual for a single.Conveniently set on a A road (but not noisy)for easy access to local scenic sights! Good food but perhaps a little more choice in the lower price range is needed. Nice garden to sit in with attractive views all around.Plenty of parking space available.

Brief and convenient stay at Portway Inn. We attended a wedding reception at Brobury House and the hotel was a perfect location for us. Room,restaurant and bar all very good and the service from all the staff we dealt with was faultless. The rooms are excellent - very comfortable beds, a lovely en-suite, and all spotlessly clean. The restaurant is modern (quite a surprise in such an old Inn)and the food is really first class. The service is superb - "Yes, of course your 4 year old son can sit on a table on his own if he wants to" - they must have the patience of a saint! The bar is an old traditional bar - so expect a few local characters in there!....or if you want, there is a very comfortable residents lounge! You would be hard pressed to find any fault with this lovely Inn! We highly recommend the Portway Inn!

We had a very enjoyable 3 night break. Hotel was very comfy, large bedroom, bathroom with shower, and plenty of rooms to sit in, as well as garden. Food was very good, both dinner and breakfast. Very handy for lots of pretty, interesting places to explore. Only downside is the very busy road outside, and in summer with windows open, it was very noisy. Would recommend it.
