An imposing eighteenth-century hunting lodge overlooking Long Sutton village green is now the setting for this rather grand gastropub-cum-restaurant. Behind the many-gabled stone facade, visitors will discover a pleasantly hospitable bar and dining room done out in contemporary style with sturdy wooden tables, wood floors and plush leather sofas. There are nine bedrooms, all individually designed in a fresh modern style, each with its own en-suite facilities, wide-screen TV and the sort of finishing touches you would expect from a private host. Lunch is a straightforward affair, with robust offerings such as smoked chicken sandwiches, ploughman's, fish stew and char-grilled beef salad as mainstays of the menu. Dinner is much more ambitious, taking in - say - crab creme brulee with fennel salad, confit of duck with sweet potatoes, orange and star anise sauce and desserts ranging from chocolate parfait with Griottine cherries to rhubarb mousse with hazelnut shortbread.
